If compiling our list of the 2017 Best Stores in Texas has taught us anything, it’s that big style is no longer just for big cities. This year, our travels took us up, down and across the state, and even our most seasoned editors were surprised by some of the boutique offerings in smaller cities that made the list.

We can’t not talk about Magnolia Pearl in Fredericksburg. In fact, if you visit the grounds of this magnificent kind-of-vintage, kind-of-otherworldly store, we bet you won’t be able to stop talking about it, either. It simply must be experienced to be believed.

El Paso really impressed this year with its lineup, whose standouts include GAL Fashion and Très Mariposas—which, we kid you not, is kind of like a small-scale Neiman Marcus. And on that note, Schreiner Goods—in Kerrville of all places!—is one our favorite spots to browse the latest designer collections.

And we’ve got to talk about Tyler, home to Mary V’s, Harley’s and Bridgette’s—those three alone had our editors occupied for an entire afternoon of retail therapy that rivals the selection in any big city.

College towns are killing it on the retail scene, too: Chrome and Drest by Scott Malouf in Lubbock, Roots and Prefontaine in Waco, and of course, By George and Adelante in Austin.

Of course that’s not to say that the big cities slouched on their offerings this year. New to the scene in Dallas’ Highland Park Village is Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James, and designer heavyweight Forty Five Ten will soon have shiny new digs on Main Street downtown.
